Location: Jukkasjärvi, Lapland, Norrbotten,
The winter season 2010/2011 will be the twenty-first in order of ICEHOTEL. A more than twenty-year journey from an igloo of 60 square meters to the world's largest hotel made of ice and snow of about 5500 square meters. The story of ICEHOTEL is a fairy tale come true.

The flowing Torne River is the origin and artery. From the river lends ICEHOTEL its ice every early spring, keep it cool in summer and re-create the ICEHOTEL as soon as the frost permits. It is here, on the shore in the village Jukkasjärvi that our story börjar.Sedan 70th century, the company Jukkas (Today ICEHOTEL) engaged in tourist activities in the area. For many years the focus was on the summer and the amazing scenery as the midnight sun kingdom has to offer. We included the first and the largest in Europe with white water rafting. But during the dark winter months, rested the river and the people in the district.
At the end of the 80s, they decided to turn disadvantage to advantage. To see the winter as an asset and to create experiences of the natural materials that were available - cold,
darkness, ice, snow and northern lights.
Inspired by the visiting Japanese artists such as sculpted in ice gave in 1990 in the artist Jannot Derid to hold exhibition in a specially built igloo built up in the middle of the Torne River. The 60 square meter building was named the Arctic Hall. Curious people flocked to get a look at the madness.
One night, stayed a couple of foreign guests in the cylinder-shaped igloo. They slept in sleeping bags on reindeer hides widespread. Enthusiastic they told about a fantastic experience which, in their testimony was unprecedented. The idea for the ICEHOTEL was born.
